About the Role

As a Senior Strategic Policy Planner within the Strategic Planning & Design Department you will take part in guiding the use and development of land within the municipality. Your role will lead the development of new planning policies and planning scheme amendments of strategic importance to Council, and assist in the regular maintenance and review of the Whittlesea Planning Scheme. You will contribute to the development of Council-wide strategies, plans and policies as they relate to land use and development, and respond to State-wide planning initiatives. You will also take part in initiatives that support the continuous improvement of department workflow and efficiency and the land use planning framework.

You will need to be able to work in collaboration with a broad range of professionals (internal and external), State Government agencies, developers and NGOs. This will require strong project management, negotiation and relationship building skills; as well as a thirst for innovation.

About You

Ideally, you will meet the below criteria however we will welcome applicants who can demonstrate an aptitude and ability to pick up the concepts:
  • Tertiary qualification in Urban Planning or related field and a minimum 5 years’ experience in strategic land use planning and policy development
  • Experience working within Local Government processes and an ability to develop land use planning policy and integrate Planning Scheme implementation requirements with Council-wide strategy, planning and policy development initiatives
  • Proven successful project management skills to establish and monitor project plans and stakeholder engagement frameworks, with previous experience in supervising, leading and motivating small project teams
  • Previous successful achievements in implementing continuous improvement initiatives
  • The capacity to present and explain complex planning policy and concepts to a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Effective interpersonal skills which incorporate a positive demeanour, a ‘can do” attitude, quality customer focus and contribute to team objectives and values
